Avengers 4 Concept Art Reveals Hulk’s Evolution

Newly leaked Avengers 4 concept art shows the Hulk’s transformation into something in line with his comics counterpart.

We were all truly devastated at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. It was the Empire Strikes Back of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To say that it was emotionally draining would be an understatement. However, there’s sort of a silver lining to the film’s final outcome—it gives the original team a final hoorah.

It’s been reported multiple times the actors portraying the MCU’s original Avengers would be hanging up their respective costumes after a very lucrative ten-year run. So a final film circling everything back would only be appropriate.

We can see Tony Stark’s character change from arrogant billionaire weapons dealer to arrogant (let’s not kid ourselves) superhero. Thor realizing his true potential as a god and benevolent king and maturing from his more rebellious younger days. Captain America becoming more cynical and seeing things in shades of grey. Hawkeye becoming a true family man. Black Widow warming up to the team and becoming more trustworthy. And … oh yeah … the Hulk …

What about the Jade Giant? He’s had one solo flick, but not much of a change. His biggest conflict has always been trying to get his anger under control. And that might be what the MCU wants audiences to think. From past experience, Kevin Feige and team have a plan for everything, and the Hulk is no exception.

Ever since Thor: Ragnarok, both Bruce Banner and the Hulk have had slight arcs. Banner seems to be more accepting of his “condition,” and the Hulk is a bit tamer—going as far as speaking and becoming friends with the rest of the Avengers. It’s also gotten to the point where Banner can willfully summon and control his “angry” side at-will.

In Avengers: Infinity War, we got something completely unexpected: a Hulk who didn’t want to fight … or, more so, a Hulk who was too afraid to fight. After Thanos unleashed a beating on him, our green friend developed a rather annoying phobia of not wanting to make an appearance and wage war anymore. In the film’s climactic final battle, it was up to Banner to use his own wits to contribute to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

It seems that relatively minor Banner subplot will develop into something much bigger in Avengers 4. In newly leaked concept art, we see some of our heroes in new suits and fresh looks. But the most blatant one is the Hulk wearing his own bodysuit with a very serene and calm look on his face. What is this hinting at? It can only mean one thing: Avengers 4 will see the Hulk and Banner egos merge, becoming the Professor!

For those who aren’t familiar with the comics, the Professor is a completely separate identity that’s the conglomeration of the Grey Hulk, the Savage Hulk, and Banner. The Professor contains the strengths of all three personalities: the Grey Hulk’s cunning, the Savage Hulk’s size and strength, and Banner’s intelligence. If that isn’t a deadly combo, we don’t know what is. That, in and of itself, is a team.

Avengers 4 may see the Hulk complete his evolutionary path. It could be an allegory to Banner truly accepting what he is. There couldn’t be a more fitting farewell than to see Bruce realizing he is both himself and the Hulk.
